Graphic Design Trends to Keep an Eye on in 2024

01/22/2021
The design space is looking to be fun and bright for 2021. Here are our predictions for what you can expect to see in graphic design trends this year.

If this yeah has taught us anything, it’s that no one knows what is around the corner. However, if we had to take a somewhat strategic guess, we would have to say that the design space is looking to be fun and bright for 2024.

Here are our top predictions for what you can expect to see in graphic design trends this year.

1. Playful Typography

Rules are made to be broken – and that’s exactly what we are likely to see with the treatment of type this year. Think of it as designers taking the chance to experiment and almost vandalise typefaces, embracing imperfection as a means to stand out and capture attention.

2. Muted Colour Palettes

Now don’t think muted necessarily means soft and pale, these colour tones can pack a punch when used in combination with bold type styles and strong layouts. Using a muted colour palette also brings in a retro look and feel, which brings us perfectly to our next predicted trend.

3. Retro Revival

The revival of retro styles in graphic design is about to have a big moment. A great example is Jones Knowles Ritchie’s (JKR) recent rebrand of fast-food chain, Burger King. A modern twist on their original 1960’s branding has revamped their look, while keeping the brand instantly recognisable. We’re curious to see how many other rebrands follow suit with this idea, momentarily taking us back in time before pandemics were at the forefront of our day-to-day lives.

4. Comic Pop

Thankfully we aren’t talking about Comic Sans here, this trend has more of a focus on illustrative styles. Think halftones and simplified dot shading that adds a level of dimension to modern designs that are typically flat and minimalistic.

5. 3D Forms

3D design has had an influence on graphic design for quite some time, but you can expect to see a lot more of it this year. With the growing popularity of virtual reality and restrictions worldwide on how often we should be out in the real world, there’s a desire for immersion in other facets of life – including what we are looking at on our screens.

6. Geometric

Hello, did someone say geo? The geometric trend isn’t going anywhere in graphic design. A combination of a balanced, yet interesting composition and a well-executed colour palette is what makes this seemingly simple concept leave an impact.

7. Authentic Representation

With the the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, designers across the globe are making a conscious effort to ensure authentic, diverse representation. We’re going to see a lot more colour across photography and illustrations, as well as a plethora of unedited imagery capturing a range of emotions.
