If you’re anything like me, you’ll know that attempts at organisation are short-lived and often become, running around frantically to get the stuff done you were supposed to do all week whilst crying. If this sounds like you I want to share some key tips I’ve learned as a Social Media and Online Marketing Intern at Soak Creative.

Creating a plan, a template, or a calendar can help you schedule ahead activities rather than doing them all at the last minute. The great thing about it is that everything is in one place, and makes it easy to access information, resources, and channels as you need them.

So, what is a social media content calendar?

Instead of having to flick back on old emails, and forgetting about flimsy tasks written on the back of your hand, a social media content calendar will help you organise the way you curate and create content online. Not only does it make your job easier, but also saves time, encourages wise allocation of resources and ensures brand consistently publishes high-quality content.

Still not convinced?

Here are some possible ways social media planning can benefit you, or your business:

Missing critical deadlines

Realising a fantastic idea for possible content a day too late is useless. Which is why it’s important to log all your content in one place as a safeguard. Setting Facebook reminders to ensure you don’t miss crafting content relevant to holidays, industry relevant dates, campaign launches, or product releases is critical practice in the social media game.

Overwhelming copywriters and content writers

Resources must be allocated in the most beneficial way for your brand, especially small businesses. The last thing you want to do is overwhelm your copywriters or content writers, which is why planning ahead activities will allow you to provide your writers with plenty of time, improving the overall standard of copy you distribute. Creativity is a process, so always allow your writers and other creative practitioners the time and space to do.

Spamming and neglecting

Without a promotion schedule content may be uploaded randomly, causing too much content on some social media platforms and not enough on others. A publishing schedule will allow you to ensure that posts are being evenly distributed across the week and will allow you to identify where more or less content is needed.

Substandard research

A successful post requires effective and thorough research. A social media content calendar will allow you the time to conduct background research before setting the due date. It will also make your copywriter’s job a lot easier.
